Fear, a universal feeling, as overwhelming as it is essential.

It’s part of our daily life and often makes us question our courage.

But there are very different fears, both material and abstract, those that need to be conquered and those that are essential for survival.

REFLECTION Marija Šćekić (2017)

REFLECTION – multimedia contemporary dance performance

“In the most painful, dreadful and darkest reflection of the Self – one finds himself/herself”

Like “SHADOW”, the contemporary dance and butoh performance in which Marija Šćekić and Tadashi Endo in a unique and original manner performed the harmony of in-between two different worlds (Croatian Dramatic Artists Award, 2006), the performance ODRAZ/REFLECTION shows what Lucija Mikas (contemporary dancer) and Elvis Hodžić (mehatronic technician and B-Boy) are in their movement essence, whether they liked it or not. The performance is also an autobiographical statement of the author about the 21st century pasia of those who decide to continue walking with heavy cross on their back while trying to remain Humans, not beasts or machines.

The strict, matematically precised choreography explores the movement essence, the space between learned (academic) and natural (organic) human movement through which two artists have communicated for years, but in fact never  really understood each other and neither their movement language. With the open-form choreographic tools and sharp artistic eye, Marija Šćekić infiltrates/penetrates the deepest and most hidden psychosomatic aspects of her dancers, to extract their raw, animalistic, reflective subtle temblors of their bodies and turn them into harmonic movement sequences where both dancers are free to spaek, move and be who they really are.

KDF007  – dance workshops

29.11.2017. 17:00 - 21:30 │ Bruno Duarte(Almada Dance Company) – contemporary dance workshop

Bruno Duarte's contemporary dance workshop is aimed at dancers and future dancers interested in trying out new processes and movement languages and testing their physical abilities as a process of enriching their personal artistic foundations. With a completely contemporary language in which you can distinguish clear hip hop influences, the class has a strong floorwork component and seeks to push the dancer’s body to the limit, mixing the fluidity of movement with a higher athleticism and endurance. The pace of the class is therefore as continuous as possible, trying to reduce the pauses between exercises so as not to generate breaks in energy. Structural wise, the class begins on the floor, with exercises based on the idea of release, strengthening the centre and counter-forces between members. The evolution occurs not only in the difficulty of the exercises but also in the energy required in each one - as the body becomes available the class uses energetic movement phrases, bringing the body off the ground and always playing with the ideas of muscular relaxation vs tension, rest vs blast. It also explores the momentum-generating gravity, culminating in the creation of a movement phrase that synthesizes the work and challenges the body and mind to explore boundaries. All classes also have, in their development, elements of improvisation that encourage dancers to explore their creative abilities. Throughout the work the dancers are encouraged to develop their individual movement within the vocabulary of the class and adapt it to their bodies and abilities. In the musical accompaniment of the classes one also looks for the mixture of influences with the use of a vast set of musical styles and rhythmic complexities.

02.12.2017. 10:30-15:00 h │ANIMALIS – Dance workshop with Marija Šćekić

The aim of the workshop is to teach the concept of a mutual relationship and the transformation of the body movement and the awareness of the participants in performing the natural, dance sequences.

The Animalis is a part of the educational program of the School of Natural Motion and Dance by Marija Šćekić. Workshop was created by a combination isometric exercises to strengthen the deep muscles of the body with slow-motion elements movements and "animal flow" exercises for mobility, flexibility, strength, endurance and neuromuscular communication. Exercises are mostly performed on floor and "in partnership with floor "and hands, shoulders, hinges, buttocks and body center are the main targets of this program. An important aspect is also the learning of the traveling form of movement that implies performing exercises that are similar to the primitive, ubiquitous movement of animals.

Isometric part of the ANIMALIS program exercises Marija Šćekić in the Republic Croatia since 2009, when for the needs of dancers and dancers LADO Ensemble first times set up a special set of exercises of stretching, mobility, flexibility and strength of the body as well prevention of dancing injuries.

...........

Marija Šćekić is the Founder and Artistic Director of Histeria Nova. She started attending classical ballet trainings at the age of 3 years old and continued until high school graduation. Apart from her education in dance, she was attending elective courses in electroacoustics, human anatomy and planetary geology (structures and dynamics of movement in our solar system) which further shaped her artistic vision into a synesthetic physical theatre where body movement, biological science and electronic sounds are inseparate.

In 1995 she moved to Montréal (Canada) to study choreography at Concordia University – the Department of Contemporary Dance. She created her first choreography „Modulation“ (1996) about trans-formative nature of acoustic waves applied to human movement and received Concordia Dance Prize for outstanding academic achievement as part of her graduation honours. Before returning to Croatia, she went traveling across Canada to New York (USA) and then across Europe while exploring different creative approaches, choreographic methods and contemporary movement ideas. In 2005 she moved back to Croatia and founded Histeria NOVA Artistic organization in Zagreb. She created and self produced many original full evening performances , education programs and initiated long term collaborations with off-art institutions in Croatia. In 2006, she received Croatian Dramatic Artists’ Award for dance piece “Sjena“, that was nominated in categories for best performance, choreography and creation in whole.

In 2011 she got assigned an Associate Professor position at Iceland Academy of the Arts and moved to Reykjavik where she stayed until the end of the year.  Currently, she lives in Zadar (Croatia) while creating new project and working as the Program Director of School for Ballet and Contemporary Dance in Šibenik.
